High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
This year, Pooncarie Public School has introduced a board game program designed to support High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE). The program provides students with opportunities to explore and develop their potential across the four domains of talent — Intellectual, Creative, Physical, and Social-Emotional — through strategic thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity in a fun and engaging learning environment.
Across our school
At our school, we are deeply committed to ensuring that every student has access to meaningful learning opportunities that meet their individual needs and inspire them to achieve personal excellence. As a rural and remote school, we value the unique strengths and challenges of our community and work closely with families to provide the support each student needs to succeed. We hold high expectations for every learner and strive to nurture their talents through engaging, challenging, and relevant learning experiences. We recognise that potential exists along a continuum, and we respond with differentiated approaches, thoughtful adjustments, and targeted support to help every student flourish and reach their full potential.
Across NSW
The NSW Department of Education is committed to ensuring that every student, has equitable access to learning programs that meet their individual needs and support them to aspire to and achieve personal excellence. High expectations are held for all students, including those identified as high potential and gifted. Achieving excellence for high potential and gifted students is supported through effective and inclusive school environments characterised by quality teaching, learning, and leadership. The Department recognises that student potential exists along a continuum, and that varying levels of potential require differentiated approaches, adjustments, and targeted interventions to enable all students to reach their full potential.
